Flowers for Events, and Built to Brief

A rose launch for a skincare house built on roses. The obvious move would have been more roses, louder. We went the other way.

The concept was tonal and close-toned: a dozen shades sitting within half a step of each other, so the eye reads texture before it reads colour. Guests could stand close to an arrangement and keep finding new things in it, which is roughly what the product does. Photographed well, too, which mattered for a launch built to travel.

MIMCO carries colour better than most brands we work with, so this was a rare brief where restraint would have been the wrong answer.

We pushed harder than our usual register: saturated tones, high contrast, and forms with some attitude to them. The trick was keeping it considered rather than loud, so it read as confident next to the product rather than competing with it. It is still one of the more colourful things we have made.

An in-store Mother's Day activation across multiple sites, which changes the problem entirely. It is no longer about one beautiful arrangement, it is about a system that a store team can rebuild each morning without a florist present.

So we designed to a recipe. A fixed stem count, a fixed order of assembly, and a shape forgiving enough to survive being remade by different hands in different stores and still look like the same campaign.

Vogue Fashion's Night Out, one evening only, installed after the store closed and struck the same night. Nothing about that timeline is generous.

The concept had to be quick to build and quick to remove, which pushed us toward fewer, larger gestures rather than many small ones. Everything was pre-built off site and assembled in place, so what happened in the store was closer to installation than arranging.

Working beside product that is designed to catch light is a specific problem. Anything reflective or busy competes, and the product loses.

We kept the palette matte and quiet, and sized everything to sit below the eyeline of the display cases. The arrangements were there to warm the space and lead people toward the product rather than to be looked at themselves, which is a discipline more retail styling could use.

Corporate Christmas has a strong gravitational pull toward novelty, and the brief here was to resist it. Festive, but not a theme party.

We took the season sideways: seasonal stems and a warm palette, with none of the usual shorthand. It read as Christmas without a single obvious signal, which meant the room still looked like the network rather than a decorated version of it.

A staff party at scale, in a room big enough that anything subtle simply disappears. The brief was warmth without corporate stiffness, which is harder than it sounds when the guest count runs to hundreds.

We designed for the far corner: forms with enough mass to read across a room, repeated at intervals so the space felt considered rather than dotted. Up close they still held detail, because half the night people stand right next to them.

Oaks Day on a rooftop, with a skyline doing most of the visual work before we arrived. The mistake would have been competing with it.

We worked low and wide instead, keeping sightlines open so the view stayed the feature and the flowers framed it. Colour was pulled from the buildings rather than from the racing carnival, which made the whole thing feel like it belonged to the space rather than being imported for the day.

Bolia arrived in Australia with a room full of Danish furniture and a clear instruction: do not decorate it. The pieces were the point, and anything we added had to earn its place beside them.

We worked spare. A restrained palette, a lot of negative space, and stems chosen for line rather than colour, so the arrangements read as objects in the room instead of decoration around it. The result sat quietly enough that most people would not have noticed the flowers, which was exactly the brief.

Retail windows have two jobs that pull against each other. They have to read from across the street, and they have to still look good on day fourteen.

We built for the second and let the first follow. Structural stems with a long vase life, arranged so the silhouette carried the whole thing from a distance, and a form that degraded gracefully rather than collapsing. The install was designed to be rebuilt in twenty minutes if a window needed refreshing mid-run.

A gin built on botanicals, which is an easy brief to over-answer. Decorating a gin launch with flowers is obvious; the interesting version is making the flowers say something about what is actually in the bottle.

We worked from the botanical list rather than around it, leaning on texture, seed heads and foliage over blooms. Guests kept asking what things were, which is the response you want when the drink itself is the story.

The Birdcage during Spring Carnival is the least forgiving environment we work in. Wind, heat, a very long day, and thousands of people moving past at close range.

Everything was chosen for stamina first and looks second, then arranged so the stamina did not show. Water sources hidden and generous, stems that hold their shape in heat, and a build that could take a knock without needing a florist to come back and fix it.

A trade show stand has to do two things at once: photograph well for the people who were not there, and survive being walked past a thousand times by the people who were.

We built to the camera first, with a clear hero angle and a composition that held up in a tight crop, then made sure the back of it was as tidy as the front. Trade floors have no good angles, so everything gets seen eventually.

A cocktail party for a recruitment firm, where the room is doing a job: people are meant to talk to each other, and the styling should make that easier rather than more formal.

We kept it informal but considered. Low arrangements that people can see over, placed to create places to stand rather than obstacles to move around. The flowers were there to make the room feel hosted, which is a quieter brief than it looks.

A private kitchen tea, and a reminder that the small jobs are not the easy ones. There is no crowd to carry the room and nowhere for a weak arrangement to hide.

The brief was soft and generous, designed to be looked at across a table for several hours at close range. That meant detail that rewards a second look, and a height that lets people talk over the top of it, which is the thing most table arrangements get wrong.
