Things are heating up at Fig and Bloom… so it’s time to talk about seasonal summer flowers. We’re constantly trying to find ways to become more environmentally friendly, which means we aim to use local farms and seasonal flowers for our arrangements. But, what does that mean for you?

What flowers are in season this summer?
Rose
Possibly the most iconic flower of all time, and rightly so. They’re packed full of meaning – from romance to gratitude, to friendship – and they have such an interesting history. They bloom in Australia from late spring to early autumn, making them the perfect addition to a summer bouquet. Roses can currently be found in many of our bouquets, including the irresistibly romantic Verona bouquet.
Lisianthus
These trumpet shaped blooms come in shades of white, pink and blue. They bloom during the summer and autumn, and can last an incredible 2–3 weeks in a vase! Also known as Lizzies or the “poor man’s rose”, we actually think these pretty blossoms give the rose a run for its money. See for yourself in the gorgeous Umbria bouquet.
Gypsophila
Commonly known as Baby’s-breath, these flowers are a common staple in floral arrangements. They have white or pink lacy florets, and are the ultimate team players, pairing well with pretty much any other flower. Gypsophila is a native Australian plant, so a great sustainable choice. And they bloom from late spring through to the summer, so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy them. You can find this dainty flower in our Osaka bouquet.
Alstroemeria
This flower has many names, the Peruvian Lily, Lily of the Incas, Princess Lily or Parrot Beak. As the nicknames may give away, this flower is originally from South America, but actually now grows in the Australian wild. So, choosing the stunning Alstroemeria is another sustainability win. They come in a wide array of colours and have a strong 2 week vase life. Get your Alstroemeria fill in the Kakadu bouquet.
Lily
With an unmistakable fragrance and a unique look, Lilies are often the centrepiece of any bouquet. These flowers come in a wide variety of colours and markings, and have been used to signify a whole bouquet of emotions, from happiness and love, to grief, and even innocence. They’re available from spring through until autumn, and can be found in the stunning Cinque Terre bouquet.
Carnations
Carnations got their name from the Latin word for crown, and were actually used thousands of years ago for Greek and Roman ceremonial crowns. They’re just as popular today, valued for their velvety petaled and sweet fragranced flowers. They also come in a wide variety of colours which makes them a florist favourite. Carnations bloom from late spring to autumn and are radiant in our Umbria bouquet.
Hydrangea
Hydrangea’s huge flowerheads make a splash in any arrangement. While they’re now available in a range of colours, in the wild they are natural pH indicators – with blue signifying when the soil is acidic and pink when it’s alkali. Hydrangeas are available in the spring and summer, and are bee friendly, making them a very environmentally conscious choice. These spectacular flowers are found in our Tahiti bouquet.
Anthuriums
Also known as the Flamingo Flower or the Flamingo Lily, these striking, glossy flowers are as flamboyant as their namesake. They are also called Tail Flowers (from the Greek Anthos –flower and Oura – tail), likely because the flower itself is actually a tall spike on top of an often brightly coloured leaf. There are over 1000 varieties of this flower, coming in a huge variety of colours. The Anthurium lends its unique look to the Cinque Terre bouquet.
