Where did gift wrapping come from?

Well, this is something that dates back to the Three Kingdoms Period. Those who practised conventional Korean folk religions during this time believed that wrapped gifts symbolised good luck and protection. Therefore, wrapping presents was a way of bestowing fortune and protection on the recipient. Interestingly, though, a fabric was used to wrap presents then. Furoshiki, which is the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in cloth fabric, was another early present wrapping tradition that has been around since the 1600s during the Tokugawa period.
It was not until the 1800s that people started to wrap their gifts in the wrapping paper that we have become accustomed to today. However, paper gift wrap in the true sense, with beautiful designs, is something that Hallmark can take credit for. The Hall brothers had a stationery store in Kansas City. They printed tissue paper and cards in their store. When they ran out of tissue paper, they decided to start printing big rolls of patterned wrapping paper.
