General Trends in Floristry
1. Colour of the year
If you were born between November 22nd and December 21st, you’re a Every year, the Pantone Colour Institute comes out with a colour of the year. Their official colour of 2023 is Viva Magenta; a bold, bright, fresh departure from the neutrals of last year. We love this choice – such a great way to shake up the New Year and bring some bright hope into our lives, for what we’re hoping to be an exciting year for all.
There are plenty of flowers that come in magnificent magenta, including our beloved Hydrangeas and even Roses. Other great choices are Azaleas and Dahlias.
Yet when it comes to flowers, Thursd has other ideas. They’re an authority on all things floral, and they say passion red is the floral colour of 2023. While they’re on the same wavelength as Pantone, they’re opting for Magenta’s deeper, richer sister. Of course, the classic Rose is the first flower that comes to mind when we think of passionate reds, but at Fig and Bloom we also love our own native beauties – so don’t miss out on Kangaroo Paw, Canberra Bells, or Australian Honeysuckle.
2. Barbiecore
Speaking of pink, there’s a lot of buzz around Barbiecore for 2023. What is this? A celebration of all things hot pink, inspired by the upcoming release of the new Barbie movie and the fashion trend of the same name. Florists are already seeing a movement from the pastel pinks of last year to bold and bright colours like magenta. So expect to see some Barbie inspired florals in the New Year…
3. Pressed flowers
Those in the know are saying that pressed flowers will be all the rage in 2023! Whether they’re framed, put in albums or scrapbooks, or even used to personalise your belongings, like phone cases, you’ll likely see a lot more pressed flowers around this year.
We love this trend! Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, pressing means you can enjoy your favourite flowers for longer, and also year- round, without worrying if they’re in season.
4. Big Blooms
More is more! That’s right, you heard it. When it comes to flowers, it’s time to go all out. We’re talking size, colour, and style! This year, understated neutral bouquets are out, and big bold blooms are all the style.
Been dying to try something new and daring? Now’s your chance. Reach for the brights, take over your whole table with a statement centrepiece, and shower your home in blooms. Bigger is better.
5. Environmentally-friendly choices
Eco-friendly certainly isn’t a new trend, but we think it’s going to be even more important this year. At Fig and Bloom, we’re so passionate about sustainability, and we love that it’s still a focus for the floristry industry this year.
An easy way to make sustainable choices is to shop seasonally and locally, which is something we try our best to do. You can also choose native flowers, and even forage them yourself, as a great way to save money on your everyday flowers. But remember to gather responsibly!
Houseplants are also a great longer-term gift idea. You could even choose a CO2 absorber, such as Snake Plants, for double the environmental benefits!
Wedding trends for 2023
So we’ve talked about some general trends, and these all apply to weddings, too. But if your big day is happening this year, here are a few extra things you should take into consideration.
1. Smaller bouquets
Despite the bigger bolder flower trends predicted for next year, trend setters are all saying dainty, small bridal bouquets will be in next year!
2. Smaller Arrangements
The larger than life elements will apply to your arrangements, instead. From table pieces to flower arches, and even floor arrangements – go big for 2023.
3. Eco-friendly confetti
Another way to make your wedding green is to step up your confetti game. Leave rice throwing in the 80s, and move on to fresh rose petals or dried gum leaves. Not only are they nicer to the birds, but they also add an extra touch of class.
4. Floral Braids
Flower crowns are beautiful, but this year we’re going minimal by braiding flowers into our hair. This classic style will elevate your outfit, and welcome nature into your look.
