May Birth Flower: What is the Birth Flower for May?

Welcome to our series on birth month flowers.

If you are born in May then you probably know what your star sign is, right? We agree that learning your zodiac signs is so fun, but did you ever wonder what your birth flower was?! We have all that you need to know about your birth flower, whether you're born in May or not, we have some interesting facts which you will take away with you after you've read this and you will be ready to pick out the perfect bunch of flowers for either yourself or your mum, best friend and the list of important people goes on.

There are two birth flowers which make up the month of May. The first is Lily of the Valley, and the second is the Hawthorn Blossom.

Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley is known as a woodland flower, which is a shade loving plant that flourishes the best when it's planted in a shady spot! The Lily flower is coloured a dreamy white and is bell shaped with an ever so lovely sweet fragrant. It is so sweet you could eat it! The Lily of the Valley symbolizes sweetness, humility, and a “return to happiness”. All of the symbols are an accurate description of the flower, with the addition of a deliciously sweet scent. What a perfect birthday flowers gift!

Hawthorn

Now to talk a little bit about the Hawthorn flower! Did you know that the Hawthorn flower comes from the tree that also creates Hawthorn berries. Hawthorn is widely known for its healing properties, the berries, leaves and flowers are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols. There are impressive health benefits of the hawthorn berry, such as helping with skin and hair issues, reducing anxiety, lowering blood pressure and many more! We thought that was a pretty cool fact about the Hawthorn flower. Hawthorn is also known as “May-tree” and the red, pink or white coloured Hawthorn flowers bloom in May, and the berries ripen into red edible berries which are sweet yet slightly tart.

The Lily of the Valley and Hawthorn flowers are quite different from each other however they both have a delicate aesthetic about them. The Lily of the Valley is a popular bridal bouquet and looks absolutely dreamy with white roses as well. Even if you are wanting to perfect that dreamy white theme in your house this flower would look gorgeous in a simple, tall vase. Funny enough, Hawthorn flowers are also another flower used in wedding bouquets and it is their soft, pastel colours and elegant look that makes them so popular for wedding flowers. These flowers also look dreamy in any ordinary bouquet, whether it's for birthday flowers or just personal flowers! They are easy to mix together with other flowers and lots of different colours. We love May's birth flowers and we hope you do too!!
